Past continuous for a short action. Past continuous for a long action.

The relationship between Julie and David started getting very bad after he took a job in Paris. Some of them knew each other for seven years. Because they didn’t argue much about anything during that time, they only chatted briefly during the same argument. Their relationship had caught on late during the past year. When they met, they seemed to be finding fault with each other and disagreeing about everything. For the first time, she decided she was not ready for marriage. I felt so bad and I felt like I had never seen anything like this. But she did meet a girl who she met online.

Why was starting and not starting? Is it because of the first time which means she did it after(but we can’t call that a start anymore)? Starting is a short action that does not go with past continuous.

The past continuous is used to describe an action lasting for some time or serving as a background for other events.

In Scrabble we often use the past continuous and the past simple. The past continuous describes a background action or event in the past; the past simple describes a shorter action or event that happened for a longer action, or which interrupted it. The history provides a continuous history and provides explanation for the event.

So saying she was starting is simple used as a background.

If a verb ordinarily has a singular aspect in an order to reverse the order in which it appears in the next sentence, it will generally be classed. It is quite common for the progressive construction to be employed in order to “recategorize” a verb which ordinarily has one sort of aspect into a different aspect.

For instance, stative verbs are not ordinarily cast in the progressive, but may be if the speaker wants us to view the state expressed as subject to change over time.

I’m seeing more and more of him these days.
She married him and was loving him now less than she had before.

While most people use the term “start” as the last sentence of an activity, it is more accurate to call “finish” as that expression refers only to the moment at which the action is set in motion or completed. Therefore it can be referred to as a gradual process that may be recategorized as such.

“He Finished his novel for three years now, now.”
Are we actually getting better at dealing with the problem?
