The strategy is to see the direction involved on the missing word, Also, temporarily remove everything unnecessary: “The judge’s standing emerged _____ ” can get rid of some words that just won’t work no matter what, like A and F

  • qn 1: the positive introductory part of the sentence, with the ‘despite’ are setting up a contrast, so you’re expecting a ‘loss’ of a negative kind. Only C and D are negative losses (and C,’significant’, seems a little -too- negative).

  • Xue Zhong “though shaken” is ‘positive’ and you’re looking for another contrast (qn 2) B and D are both positive. ‘shaken’ ‘evokes possible damage more than possible lessening, so I would go with D.

You’re right about your first question and the second. Significant and considerable are synonyms.

The expectations in the GRE reflects your knowledge and skills already. As Robusto says in his account, we are wrong about the first part. The first part says yet despite heavy use of pesticides, __ losses to diseases are sustained each year. The two words, yet and despite together create a sense of negativity, while equitable is usually used in a positive sense. What are context neutral C,D which are also make sense.
