Word for “surround in such a way as to reduce the prominence of the surrounded object”?

How

are taller, more impressive buildings built?

I’m pretty sure there’s a word for that. A word that has hide and surround in it, which is a word that has surround and surround combined. The only word I can think of is enveloped but enveloped between buildings sounds strange.

Is there any suggestion or how do I follow along when required?

What is the best way to describe yourself to a non-mathematical audience?
