Why does “there is nothing in the box” sound wrong?

Usually we write “There’s nothing in the box”, but I don’t know why.. Generally, I write “There’s nothing in boxes”. I know the proper way to write that, but why?” If I were to get rid of this, what would I have been

if I asked “Is not”?
