Why do prefixes mean not?

What are the English prefixes that “not” or “opposite to”? I was confused as to why such a large number of them exist. As England has roots in so many other languages, I was hoping somebody could help me understand maybe how some prefixes hail from different languages, and why we have kept all of them? There are even micro-differences in meaning, and I’d love any insight or suggestions on that, if you have them already? How do I translate many different profixes to different words using the same
