What’s the difference between “Thousands of thousands” and “Thousands of thousands”? “Thousands upon thousands” (Letter of Claudine Kamelert)

Is “thousands of thousands” grammatically correct? Why does it seem that “thousands upon thousands” sounds better, even though the former is closer to the logical truth? Is there any difference at all?

What do you think of this new generation of poets?

To my ear, thousands upon thousands could just mean “severe thousands” or “many thousands”.
