What is the wrong word for dismissing contrary opinions as irrational?
I’m looking for a phrase or (ideally) a single word to describe someone who dismisses any opposing opinion as being wrong and a result of being unable to think correctly. What does the right opinion mean?
I’ve looked at Word for someone that always has to be right and Word for dismissing somebody’s opinions as racist, sexist, etc. instead of debating back but I feel like they don’t capture the implication of stupidity/deliberately incorrect thinking.
Are disingenuous words sounding awful to you? Hence the term disingenuous by some people, who dismiss opinions as disingenuous. Having said that, how is this word used, was the word
wrong itself, in both forms.
I think that the word you are searching for is “..” First
up, there is a scene in one of my favorite movies ( Little Big Man, starring Dustin Hoffman) in which an actor who plays a native American is the kind fellow who fits your description, though on a slightly lower level, intellectually. Would saying goodbye
-
to someone say hello to any one on their first kiss?
-
People go into a creek to bathe, he will take a “bathe” in sand
-
people ride a horse by facing forward, he will ride backward
The tribe of which he is a member call him a contrary.
When there is a modification in spelling – contrarian – : One
who takes a contrary view or action… Which is a contrarian person? Anyone who doesn’t agree with a person who takes a view, esp. one viewpoint or another. one who rejects the majority opinion. Or, one who should reject the majority opinion?
One can be used specifically to refer to a person whose ideas about smart investing are contrary to those of his or her peers, but it can also refer, I believe, to a person who takes a contrary position regarding virtually anything someone feels strongly about and can defend intelligently and rationally.
Why must you always be the contrarian, John? I’d like to see you recognize just once that I’m correct when I recommend a course of action.
What is the best way to express your opinion?
hidebound TFD
Stubbornly prejudiced, narrow-minded, or inflexible.
What does everyone need in the world to enjoy?
An enthusiastic person displays intense interest in something ( for example, skydiving enthusiast about what they like in general) (see examples). A fanatic is not only intense and eager but possibly irrational in her enthusiasm; fanatic suggests extreme devotion and a willingness to go to any length to nurture that enthusiasm ( a fly-fishing fanatic who hired a helicopter to reach his favorite stream). What does a religious zealot exhibit when supporting a cause or a cult? Can someone be considered an extremist if they considered them a threat to the overthrow of the government? What does a bigot do about his beliefs? In contrast to fanatic and zealot, the term bigot implies intolerance and contempt for those who don’t agree ( a bigot that couldn’t accept his daughter’s decision to marry him outside her faith).
- Does Bigot have an Oxford dictionary?
Personally most people I would describe as a bigot do act and discuss as if they think everyone who does not agree is stupid &/or like a joke.
On the other hand the word has very negative connotations which might overstate what you want to call a person as you are asking about.
Right now I’d like to put too dogmatic. Oxford Dictionary
I would possible describe someone who acts as described in the question about something like engineering principles a dogmatist.
Since the dogma leading to the life and career of the person is unquestionably true, every other conclusion is also right (as the dogmatist doesn’t accept the conclusion) and irrational (if it’s about something believed to be untrue). Admittedly that might not fulfil the ‘dosn’t think correctly’ part.
The Historically Religious Dogmatists (the inquisition) not only saw other opinion as wrong but also as ill willed attack on their world view. I am surprised @user184993, but I really think
it is my last comment. Just sayin’. @user184993 I would love it. Thank you.
The zealous
Person Merriam-Webster (n.) or A person who is in pursuit of their religion, political, or other ideals.
How do
I become a liberal zealot when I don’t believe in a particular religion or political party and don’t care about theology or philosophy as a whole? Many people will not attest to that their perspective is truth, but will not entertain any argument against their base beliefs. We have to be respectful.
However, having to confront opponents of their belief system would mean a big hassle to them, and may even cause tantrums.
What is universally logical? An illogical zealot might argue a logical statement should be considered a logical statement simply because
it contradicts their belief.
