What is the meaning of standard deviation?

What’s actual meaning of standard deviation?

From
“Everybody Loves Raymond”, there was an episode which was named “Script Deviation”. John Robert Raymond’s brother was administering an IQ test for Raymond’s wife, Debra. Raymond was receiving a surprise letter from Robert, but not his wife. Louis Raymond got 99 points for his contribution but Robert did not give him a high score. Debra scored 115 points for his contribution. Roberts called it a case of standard deviation and added that that meant that Debra was in a “whole class of higher brains” as compared to Raymond.

What is the difference between deviation from a norm and normal deviation?

Neither, but closer to normal deviation.

Normal deviation is just a bell curve to describe a deviation in a given value. However, 50% of results are above the mean, 50% are below the mean. Standard deviation is basically distance from the mean – is that bell curve tall and skinny (small s.)? d.), wide and flat (large s. in s. (d).) or in-between.
