What is the difference between sophisticated and intricate?
I know this is probably a very simple question, but it seems to me that I see “sophisticated” more in specialized books, and “intricate” more in non-specialized books. Why is there so much difference between a product and a service?

By using both “sophisticated” and “intricate” the term “complex” can be used to describe an electronic or mechanical device, or a human institution. This software product uses sophisticated encryptian software. The clock is self-regulating. It is an intelligent weapon. “Ruritania has a sophisticated parliamentary government. In any of those cases you could substitute “intricate” with no discernable change in meaning.
Why is “sophisticated” negative? If you are trying to say that something is too complex, you would be more likely to say “intricate” than “sophisticated.” Is it a little more subtle?
In this context I think they’re pretty much synonymous.
Note “sophisticated” has another meaning, “not naive, wise, not right.” I’m very happy that Jane has learned from her mistakes. “She worked hard and has a keen intellect. But since launching her business to the big city and stayed in school, I can’t believe she left her old age.” Which is correct? You wouldn’t say “intricate” there.
