What is the difference between selecting by color and selecting according to color?

In a paper I read, the authors selected various images by color, and I wondered if what they did wouldn’t be better expressed by according to color. I am a college student and think about this topic for 6 years. The more I thought about it, the less sure I was. I have a muddled brain. Can someone help

me?

Since by has a sense “according to”, (according to) is the same.

3 The second is shorter, as well as more cumbersome. It’s not a difference in meaning but it is a practical reason to favour first.

Now, if a given use of by in this sense was open to misinterpretation to any of the other senses of by, that will be a reason to favour the latter. If it was possible, I’d go for the first.
