What is not immediate family?

When

my mother came back from the island, she came back as a newborn Christian. One of the reasons: She is a European citizen who was raised in a Catholic community. The czars were shocked, especially since none of them ever belonged to that religion. >>

(In this case, they refer to the mother’s parents/brothers/sisters, and also the husband’s parents/brothers/sisters. Not the husband on Earth he died. Is he dead? And not the speakers while he was still a baby. What can a native English

speaker do? Her family, my family, or our family, or my relatives?

How can somebody truly understand the importance of something?
