What is ‘always’ modifying? What do you mean by that?
- When there’s someone at home in the evenings, it feels like something is always amiss.
- Why is life so busy?
- Ellie was always very good at art.
I have to modify my own words. I think it is modifying ‘is, are, was’. Can’t I think “is, were,” mean “exist”? Why does “exist” mean is always modifying “exist”. This is not what we think of before it may come to be. Am it an insult?
As in
- There exist always someone at home in the evenings.
- We don’t ever exist this busy!
- Ellie does always exist. She can do anything (so does anything) so she is a good artist.
My opinion, these don’t mean different from the sentences above.
Are you following the right line. However, don’t confuse state of be-ing verb with existence.
Your sentences could be restated as
‘There always is somebody at home in the evening’.
Not always are we this busy!
Ellie was always very good at anything she did. She was always very good at art.
