“What I held in my hand was…” What I held in my hand had been?

What is the correct form? Should I Write:

My teacher said I had stumbled upon a colony of ants, that an anteater or some other animal had probably made the hole in an attempt to eat them. Let’s see what I’d hold in my hand, I’d found an exploding ant.

Or

My teacher said I had stumbled upon a colony of ants that an anteater or some other animal had probably made the hole in an attempt to eat them. I had caught an ant in my hand. And it gave me an explosion.

What are some of the best legal guides which I can help you with?
