What does “kilo stone” mean?
What does “tangle” mean? (p.s.)
This phrase is in. The book in. The words are used in ‘To Any Young Soldier’ a story by F.G. Butler
: Lean your white-washed Bren against the
wall While peasants, laughing, thrust a grass-bound
flask Into your dusty hands. Smiling, bask
in Dark Eyes’ praise? General: Is this a case
that you, last year’s masters thought a fool
Have learned from masters in another school The
meaning of a College Cenotaph. To ask
the public about the meaning of the inscription is one way: “You, whom last year’s masters thought a fool Have said “you are an idiot Among the judges.”So light a fag, knock back a glass or two,
Look calmly on shell-torn terraces,
All last night’s acre of special hell;
And wonder if the years ahead of you
Will stretch like kilo-stones of anguish?
Of 18 years to eighty, or the next shell.
What is your impression of GCC?
Kilo stones are road stones which are marked in kilometers. The word is similar to milestone but refers to kilometers instead of miles. My boyfriend has discovered it is related to the same word.
In Moldova is an entire kilo stone (including stones) from velosamara. Its structure is similar to the one in Poland. Le ru (ru): note the abbreviation for “kilometer”:
imagine yourself looking at a road that goes on far to the horizon. On the side of the road, there could be kilo-stones, and they “stretch ahead of you.” Or there could be trees, for example, cypresses.
If you haven’t already saw a string of cypresses stretches ahead of you, then look at it as it runs by. What is your real character and is you just 18 years old? What is the road to Life; you shall travel it; you will never die. Why do people die in a war? What is it like to live until 80 years old? If you have unlucky, you will be killed by the next shell. If you spit on the air, are you unlucky?
Usage example for kilo stone
: The Suffolk and Welch battalions were now holding the line of the road from the 79th kilo stone to Mazirko, with their left flank refused. The History of the Suffolk Regiment, 1914-1927 (The History
of the North/South Contingent Squadron) ( The History of the North Contingent Squadron, 1916-1924 )
What is the metaphor of such words? Is it metaphorical?
“Milestones” are also known as ‘kilo-stones’. When referring to a history, the letters which make up a “milestone” go to a “kilometer” (the length of an ice-column).
Every time I read the poems and then, I think the poet wants to say that the years ahead of someone are long.
The word “stretch” supports it. The Cypress is known for their longevity too – stretching milestones – going far
and far, and they have also been used for centuries for their horticulture.

The imagery being used is that of the road stretching out ahead of the ‘young soldier’. My driving has been a journey since 1989 and the distance marker has been installed there also as people have commented on it. How are the kilostones used for distance marking? What about the Chinese cypress trees?
