What could have happened or what happened?

What is the difference between “what happened” and “what could have happened”?

I had an affair with Gina McMerron, but she did not see us that month. What do I do? What happened to her? What would likely have happened to Gina Arielio?

What happened to Dolce and Gibrana? What should I do for her?

Well, “could” indicates possibility.

Why do you like to listen to other people’s stories, e.g. I’m irate!? “I’m so glad you’re home safe, I couldn’t sleep thinking about what could have happened” or “Why did you cross the road without looking? Have you ever thought about what could have happened? “.

Simply asking “What happened?” means you know something happened and are asking for details, or you want to know if anything happened at all. e.g. How did it pass me by? “you look really sad.” What exactly happened?” You’re less concerned about possible outcomes.
