What are literary types of English?

Would be acceptable in written English to write “Differentiate between different types of…”. Have I ever been harshly criticized for writing “Participants experienced the experience of…”?

Many thanks.

I agree that this is a reasonable point of view, but overdue. If you are asked to differentiate between things, the obvious assumption is that the things are different, so it’s not necessary to say so explicitly. You can just write “Differentiate between types of…”.
