When Marina was 11, she got the news that Lee had already been convicted. Having visited him a lot, she knew she was guilty. Marina could see it in his eyes and Lee wasn’t his usual demanding himself, even saying he was being treated alright.
This sentence is related to Lee Harvey Oswald’s behaviour after his arrest. I dont understand the bold parts of this sentence in my English language. Does it stem from the fact that Lord HO confessed his guilt?

Why doesn’t this mean that his usual demanding self would not claim he was being treated alright? Was that a clue for Marina?
