Underlying vs. Overarching.

In a physical sense, “underlying” and “overarching” have very different definitions, but if we use these words in an abstract way, their meanings seem to intersect.

What were the differences between terms such as underlying theme in this narrative?

I thought there’s a nuanced difference here, but I can’t quite identify it.

Underlying tends to be implicit, because it’s underneath–hidden, inaccessible. With overarching, tends to be explicit. Can you see it? Does heaven really lift?

Also, both word mean “fundamental”. I think they are distinct, so I will have to

look them up a little later on.
