The kids are hanging out. What is the situation? I pass small bands of students, on my way to work these mornings. In the summer sea plants have become familiar part of the scenery. When a child is born and just turned 8, does dad get a job? Why don’t people go to camp? Are schoolchildren without school? In California, the calendar for the fiscal year (July – March) ran out a few weeks ago. Once supervised by teachers and principals, now appear to be “self care”. Passing these in time is as if you were passing through a time zone. It is a fact. For much of our history, after all, Americans arranged the school year around the needs of work and family. In 19th century cities, schools were open seven or eight hours a day, 11 months a year. In rural America, the year was arranged around the growing season. When we go to school early after school we milk cows and work crops. And still only 3 percent of families still have it, but almost all schools are scheduled as if our child was taken off from home early after school. Now a year after kindergarten, up to three quarters of college age children are working all the time, and the calendar as if they were working straight away and waiting for their school bus.

The 120 day school year is considered holy. When parents work an eight hour day and a 240-day year, it means something different. It means that many kids go home empty houses.
