Is it mandatory to use a comma before a coordinating conjunction uniting the independent clauses in a compound sentence?

I understand that this sentence involves a comma. If not, why?

When in doubt, my friend asked about not adding a comma

before “but” in your response.

Why is the addition of a comma not required in Greek?

When I looked Google for sources to answer our disagreement, I found no authoritative sources and many sources were contradicting one another. Some argue, like I believe, that it’s not necessary because the addition of a comma is null in that context (i.e. Is the addition of comma useful (i.e. the verb in writing should make it simpler to read) and I am not familiar with the English terms?

What are some good examples of what is the most important one? Is there a comma before the conjunction?

What I was taught in school was that it’s acceptable to not include the comma in joining very short independent clauses. What is “short enough” is a judgment call?

If a comma does make a picture clearer if I should use it, why should I use it too? (a) I think to put the number in, and (b) whenever the comma makes things clearer, by all means it should be used.

According to your particular case, your second independent clause is short enough that you could get away with omitting the comma. (I would include it, though.)

When it helps make a very clear meaning, the use of a comma helps make the meaning of the verb more clear. If you’re using a personal letter, put a comma ahead of the last letter. But it isn’t always necessary.
