Is Craze vs. Craziness the same thing?

I am a native English speaker, and my friend is my friend. I mean that you are a native English speaker. We are not literature students but we have our interests in English language and we speak it to a decent level. He thinks we cannot use the word “craziness” but we have to use craze in literature. What is the best word for craziness in literature?

After searching several online dictionaries, it seems to me that craze also has the same meaning as craziness but normally craze is used to describe popularity of something while craziness is used to describe insanity.

Do all the meanings in the dictionary of these words always correspond? Is this expression all true? Can you use craziness for literature about the ruffles?
