In a way, it is the first time I’ve ever flown to America, and the first time I’ve seen anyone in the U.S. at all. It’s really fascinating.” Is that clause a relative clause?
This is the first time that I have flown to America. Surely I do do enough research before doing this, right?
The above example sentence is borrowed from the following earlier post..
It’s be the first time I’ve ever fled to the
USA.
I had just returned from France for the very first time. What changed.?
Is optional and in parentheses?
What is that clause? Is it an ordinary relative clause? Why is it not allowed to use “when” instead of “that”?
It will be the first time I fly to the USA. Ngram:
is the first time that vs. when I edit : I’m
leaning toward the relative clause. it’s the first time I thought about it. 🙂
What is the weirdest part of that relative clause insofar as the antecedent is time? What are some other relative clauses that don’t quite allow “when” for a “time” antecedent?
What are some tips and tricks that will make an individual happy?
What is the relative clause?
- It starts with that
- it contains a subject and object (is a complete sentence without the relative pronoun)
Don’t be distracted by the possible variations, the variation with ‘that’ is usually the most telling intro to a relative clause. When’ works grammatically and you might think it’s the better choice, but it just isn’t used that much by native speakers (and sounds a little weird).
I just know it’s the first time I’ve ever flown to America.
What sentences are that clause? I wouldn’t say it is a relative clause. Is there any empty subject, “it” is the percursory subject and that-clause is the main subject.
Though it is not very stylistic it would be possible to place the that-clause in subject position:
that I fly to America is the first time.
Is
Relative clause a supplement? What is different about views? I am thinking how do I try and prove that we have no relative clause? Is there a royal family with three daughters?
2 What if the king had a daughter ill?
Once there was a king no children, God had given no children to him.
If this is the first time “I flies to America” it’s a relative clause. The difference of the type is negligible. For reasons.
