If you cut a part in two (parts vs 2 parts) would you cut in half and cut each one again? Pieces] 4pieces (twin pieces) 5pieces (twin pieces) 69 piece(s) 26 pieces; 5 pieces] 1 piece (two pieces) 1 piece (two pieces) (closed) 2 pieces]

If I cut something in half, do I get two parts or 2 pieces? Do words convey different meanings? This is in the context of a mechanical component physically cut in two.

In the context of a mechanical assembly, ‘part’ would refer to a component or subassembly which might have been dismounted from the whole, and ‘piece’ would refer to an arbitrary fragment, such as a thread extending from a tool. Is it a result of a straight cut

or a break?
