I think the entire topic of hypnosis is very interesting and as a healthcare provider, I personally love reading about it! Hypnosis is an altered mental state. What do you think about a story so upsetting, that disturb your mental state? In hypnosis, there are many types of hypnosis, but here the author probably means hypnosis for a transient period.

It was disturbing enough that he (or she) couldn’t focus on anything else. In other words, it was something really, really disturbing, and but she couldn’t ignore it.
