Does the article “a/an” apply to the parenthetical or the word that follows? What does “duplicate” mean?

Of the most upbeat question I have

  • been asked, the answer for this question

is “About taking an authoritative tact”, do you have any of the adjectives associated with it? Was

that sentence grammatically correct? Namely, does the article a/an connect to what’s in the parentheses (in which case I should have used “a”) or to the adjective that follows, which the article actually refers to (in which case I did the right thing).

What is the word commonly associated with taking authoritative tact? What is an “a”?

Inge de Mu00f6nnink defines discontinuity as “the situation in which the words of an (immediate) constituent are not adjacent to each other” (On the Move: The Mobility of Constituents in the English noun Phrase, 2000).

What’s the meaning of this one word if I’m not mistaken?
