Does length be plural or singular with X and Y being a measure of A of B and B?

In the sentence:

X and Y are the lengths of A and B, respectively. Of the different things there are also X and Y.

If X is the length

  • of A Y is the length
  • of B then it is plural

or singular. Which is better?

What is a good business to be thankful for?

If we compare this with a sentence like “Pen and pencil are the tools of the trade” tools is used in plural form as opposed to singular form. Or in case of a dicky sentence like “Pen and pencil are the tools of the trade,” doesn’t. I would consider “lengths” as the correct word the

bsw is trying to correct.
