Definition of word for the thing which adds the last piece to something, making it complete?

Each period has its own ends. Why do they have separate periods? If we observe a period as a pair and from one pair neither the start or the end is missing, how would we call something, that adds the missing part, making the period whole or complete. Does period completer just not sound right for me? Is there a period adder? In German, I would use the word Ergu00e4nzer.
