Brief excerpt from book by Arundhati Roy.

From God of small things,

When Estha and Rahel’s mother got married, her father-in-law gifted the young couple a car as a gift. Now the sentence: “He

gave the young couple a custom painted, powder-pink fiat as a present which after the wedding he drove off in himself, with all the jewelry and most of the other presents that they had been given” “He will not be using any of it that he does if he gets hung up so he can’t come home at night” Does

“drove off in himself with jewelry” part mean that he took the car back and used it and jewelry stuff by himself or he (father-in-law) drove them from wedding place to their new home in the car with all other stuff. What are you missing, Am I alone missing something? TIA

He gave the young couple a custom-painted, powder-pink fiat as a treat which until after the wedding he drove off in himself with all the jewelry and most of the other presents that they had been given. He had been doing a lot of talking with the young couple and kept them satisfied until the wedding.

When the father returned to the father he took the

gift of all your wedding bands and presents. It seemed like a silly gesture. The gift of ham went exactly into his car. And as you can see, I’m all over it.

Is “on” in relates to the car. Hisself means he was at the wheel driving off or at least in the car giving orders to the driver. To drive off means to leave in a vehicle. 4

The fact he drove off in it tends to imply that he went away, rather than that he was doing a favour. Is there any more context about how he took their car back? As we know, it is a coincidence. The text could later say that he brought it all back so one cannot draw final conclusions from this sentence.

He gave the young couple a custom-painted, powder-pink fiat as a gift which, after the wedding, he drove off in himself with all the jewelry and most of the other presents that they had been given. Parse:

just because there are “paragraphs” makes it comprehensible and has a good clear focus. ”

To drive off is to drive away or leave a place in a vehicle.

Car driver. He drove off in his own car. He didn’t retell what happened yet. If I give someone the car I don’t typically use daily, I can’t drive it myself. I like it.

How can I improve myself?
