I, as well as the word canonic, would suit your needs. Is in the US a word that could have a meaning of quality or approval but rather a term that the subject is considered standard or an orthodox? When a canonical example is given in a particular discipline a particular example itself occurs.

While I have little knowledge and experience of standard, I think it is as neutral as it gets. The word can mean average, usual or typical, but it can also mean up to standards. So for me at least, it doesn’t carry the same negative connotations as average or typical.
