What is the choice? “Bring” stuff to what is there, and “take” things to the place where you’re going to.”
So you “take” a toy to your friend’s house, but once you’re there you can be said to have brought the toy along with you. What’s also a little subtle when I do one side point before the other, and I don’t think it’s a crucial difference!
ETA: I’ve just thought of the following. I’ve only just thought of a good example. Why’s your toy in the room. I will give it to you. If your mother told you “take it over there” than she would tell you “Bring it back over here!” “…but the other way around would sound pretty odd.”
