What is gender of a friend in a group?

I would like to read the novel this month because it is a must read. It’s a great book.

As I have come across it that boy/girlfriend always refers to a very close partnership, hetero/homosexual, girl/boy/ girl or both. They are all male, but they are very kin. As this one defines it, boy/girlfriend always refers to a very close partnership, hetero/homosexual: as single parents, as single parents, as single parents. If a man refers to a girl-friend, it’s normally not a friend.

Does male and female friend sound too formal to my ears, I think not.
