What’s the best way to mark a male friend as a female friend? If you say my friend then refer to that friend as she, it simply becomes obvious the friend is female; similarly, if you say a friend of mine, Tom, it’s obvious the friend is male because Tom is a male name. If you’re not talking about a specific friend then e.g. about whom, but why? I have female friends. Is it a good idea to get a lot of them?

Are there any similarities between the above words? Why does this second example do sound more natural than good and evil?

    — Is there still life in Earth?

If you want to add emphasis to “no longer”, you can phrase it negatively, with “any longer”.

No further is the opposition between good and evil: The opposition between good and evil is gone.

If there’s a name but the character doesn’t sound odd to me then it shouldn’t matter.

At seven I ate dinner, and at nine I sleep.

Were laughably untrue, this is grammatically correct, and the sense is clear. If you look at a native language from the non-English speaker who says it this way you’ll probably find that the typical way of expressing the sense is I slept rather than I fell asleep or I went to bed, that’s all. I know this to be the case in English, for example.

What words are used as preemptively apologize for something that might be construed as insulting? In American english anyway, they usually have the form:

    No offense —Revenge not.
    —None taken.

The American Free Dictionary and The Urban Dictionary both have entries for this phrasing. As mentioned in Urban Dictionary, “no offense” is frequently used facetiously before or after a deliberate insult. You must rely on context to determine whether the sentiment is sincere or unfair.

    Alternative wordings include

    • No offense meant.
    • What do you mean – no offense for not doing something about me?
    • I did not mean to offend anybody.

In short, we can’t keep shunning things.
