In the English language, you clarify what you are talking about when referring to a subsection by saying “subsection 23 (1)”, or in spoken English you would say “subsection twenty-three, One” * Note: When referring to sections 23, 21, 22, 23 and 22, paragraphs are used by paragraphs 1 to 22, paragraphs 11 and 15, the English statement “subsection shall be taken” is not a phrase. You can also say “Section twenty-three, Subsection one.”

“Subsection” twenty-three (1), it is written to tell the listener that “the subsection you are referring to is subordinate to.”

Statute Example:

  23 All dog leashes shall be solid blue in color unless; (1) If the dog is a seeing-eye dog, then the leash should be solid white in color (where applicable) in the first place.  

Using the statute example above, a person who is reading this law could say that according to subsection twenty-three, one, a person with a seeing eye-dog has to use a solid yellow leash.

In section twenty-three, subsection one, a person with a seeing-eye dog has to use a simple yellow leash.
