The answer of this question will massively depend on where in the United States you travel. Most US dialects are undergoing changes in Progress, and are they not all changing in the same way (see the Atlas of North American English ).
When a language change is as the children in /between and the adults..when / why does it mean that/ if it has a language that is not as important as the adult who is speaking it. However, how they speak depends on the direction of the change. In the American West, there is a particular change that has making short- a sound backer so that the “cat” is sounding more and more like “cot”. In the Great Lakes region, the exact opposite is happening, where ‘cot’ is sounding more and more like a cat. But, this does not happen in Italy.
What does it mean for children to sound different from adults in both the West and Great Lakes region?
