As John and Mary appear like married couples, the language suggests an old-fashioned setting and this is possible. I often say that Mary is the one who gives all of Joseph’s money to John and that is OK. Is John the Breadwinner? If so, is he being so generous? They both consider their money as their own. To be honest the man has repeatedly stated he would be winning his own money if he performed his own “playing against you” actions.
