When forming a parallel construction such as this, it is important to include all the words necessary to make the parallelism work properly. As you note, “outlook” and “reality,” require two different prepositions, those prepositions need to be included in the paralleled structures. Let’s do it! What else will I have to do? Interestingly, the prepositions do make the sentence look at least a little bit awkward, so it is probably worth your while to search around a bit for alternative words that use matching prepositions, or to change the sentence to eliminate the parallel construction.

Crime in Europe: the reality vs. the perception

    What is

    outlook?

  • A few options:

gapes, goggles, drops his jaw, gawks, stops dead in his tracks, boggles, staggers. If anyone has ever had to go through these four bungles, there is one available.

Not all of them are exact drop-in replacesments for X, but can all be active verbs. Adam

closes the door and (gas/goggles) visits Sarah.

Adam opens the door and (drops his jaw) after seeing Sarah standing there.

If Adam opens the door, only to stare

slack-jawed at Sarah, who is standing there waiting with an air of impending doom hovering around her, think / say “The good / the bad”?

Whats your opinion on the topic of immigration?

  • What can people do with stones tossed in the crowd just so we can let the crowd know we are razzing or heckling…

Occasionally people are more obnoxious than others, and engage in badgering or taunting, although those are generally more appropriate for a one-on-one scenario.

The sentences, while very similar, do have a subtle difference of meaning.

How do I describe how the x or z axis of an

image will occur? -> -> The image will be sheared in such a way that the x-axis goes through (1,1).

That is a description of WHY something is done: The image will

be sheared so that the x-axis goes through (1,1) -> The image -> will be sheared in order for the x-axis to go through (1,1). Because the camera has to pass through the x axis to image it will be sheared as

    needed.)

First of all, it’s a poorly written sentence ; reminders is not a verb, it should be reminds, and that generally takes an object. In grammatically correct form, either

money reminds us of how unhinged things can become with money

    or

I’s a reminder of how unhinged things can become with money

The ending clause, with money, does a bad job of expressing its purpose: money is the reason why things become unhinged.

Why is Unhinged cited as being a synonym for crazy? But of course the things didn’t simply “happen”—people did that things because their judgement was affected by the prospect of gaining (or losing) that much money.

Do people make ridiculous things with money?
