The debate is over which is right (!), but not much about what the difference is during the debate. Good question.
The word math
was first used in English in 1581, coming from the Latin word Mathematica. Since -a is not plural in Latin, the word is translated as plural. The word itself continues to be a singular even though the word itself is always used in English.
Why did ABC called Math at the beginning of the 17th century and the abbreviation “math” was introduced first. What’s the first usage that’s ever been recorded is 1891? After the invention of the English abbreviation mth in 1896, the law not changed. Is it reasonable to assume that either the American and the British developed the abbreviation separately or that the British picked up the American abbreviation but then chose to pluralise it?
