Is the word “looks” indicative of the perception of human reality.
The way a person “comes across” can be communicated by looks, by voice, by behaviour, and conceivably by smell, taste or taste.
So
“She looks very interested in people, but when you hear her talking she comes across as self-absorbed”.
Is it possible or possible for it to be reversed?

What does “Even so” mean?
What is it like in Kipling’s time?
In the second, the meaning makes complete sense. Who was found dead in the well? She died at the well. “Yes! She was found dead in the well.
In your first example it may well mean that, but we’d need more of a quote to be sure.
