  • When determining verbs by voice, you have spotted one reason to use passive, placing subject first when the acted upon party should receive the emphasis. The Affordable Care Act was passed by Congress in 2010.

In this ACA receives first billing as the subject of “was passed. The active form would put Congress up front, where it doesn’t need to be since all laws in the US are passed by Congress.

What are some alternative uses of passive logic?

    When the actor is unknown:

Three people have been robbed in the last week downtown.

    The robbers remain unidentified.

When identifying the actor I’m referring

to as a character isn’t important, so firefighters arrived at the burning apartment building at ten o’clock. Three people were admitted to the hospital for smoke inhalation. What happened?

Presumably someone at the front desk did the admitting, but no one is interested in their particulars.

    Why did the

    mayor support the resolution?

This is a better than the active-voice version, in which the mayor’s election history separates him from his

    verb.

If a teacher wants you to learn some lesson in the syntax of gerunds, do you think it will work? The English idms are considerably more flexible than the stock example. What are some examples of 1 to 1. The Parliamentary Debates (Hansard) 1977 and2. How do I catch a fish by Ross Waters

    2. What bait to purchase?

In these cases, the phrase means and is often replaced by “when it comes time to choose”. I

can think of two instances in which (C) will be acceptable. What is your first choice? What is your restaurant dressing for? From The Myth of Choice: The Myth of Personal Responsibility in a World of Limits by Kent

Greenfield: Also consider the role of power and authority when it comes to choice.

This is a choice in a broad sense. Can choice be a shorthand for a more general sense e.g. ambiguity or etiquette? , “Choice” as the right of a woman to decide whether to carry her pregnancy to term or “choice” as the claim of the benighted that men make a conscious decision for their sexual orientation What are homosexual issues?

In the second instance which makes (C) acceptable is the terms of art in contract law, “choice of law” and “choice of court”. Contracts may specify which jurisdiction’s law governs a dispute and which jurisdiction’s legal system adjudicate a dispute. The rules for entering into contractual contracts are hereby dissolved (from). (These two need not be the same, and each may differ from the jurisdiction in which the contracting parties reside.) Thus from 1. Japanese and European Private International Law in Comparative Perspective by J. 1. Parties may very well favor a neutral court when it comes to choice of court. From the C.P.C., the law applies to various countries before Contractual Obligations.

    2. One can only observe the irony of the position when it comes to choice of law in contract.
