“This is the car my friend recently purchased….” If you haven’t yet driven a Chevrolet or a Buick before it used classic, does this signifies never a brand-new vehicle?
If there is more than one classic car, the driver can say, “This is his most recent purchase. ” I
collect vintage sewing machines, and I will say, “I got a new vintage sewing machine today,” without confusion ensuing.
Old is a good word for “needing improvement.” We have a brand new Typewriter. “Check out this old typewriter I just bought. When we say vintage or antique “I want to take something back to basics”, we think about the classic. It was once the best old or classic. I am not sure what makes it old?
Possibly related to our culture’s obsession with youth and vitality, old has acquired the negative connotations of tired, worn-out, used-up, etc. Why is it wrong to be old?
