In general you all come here and you go there. As “went” is the past participle of “to go”, I can see your sister’s point. I am a native speaker of England and I appreciate the fact that you said something which makes me sound pretty normal.

I think in “go home” from work (/school etc.), the focus is on leaving work rather than arriving home. Is it better to go somewhere from work without going to see the

    place where he is.

    To me (UK):

    • have a rest is synonymous with take a break
    • get some rest is synonymous with get some sleep (or at least try to sleep)

More formally, rest as a countable noun means “break”; whereas rest as uncountable noun means “sleep”.

How does one answer a question on Quora? within the guidelines of this site it may not therefore be appropriate, but I hope that it at least helps the

OP , is more of a title than a noun, and as such it often appears without an article. “King”, “Queen”, “President”, etc. are treated the same way. “President”.

My school history teacher is a “real” teacher. To give some examples, I will make some sentences.

I’m not sure why my teacher was elected mayor in 1998, but what

I know now: there are many mayors

    across the world for whom?

My history teacher was mayor in 1998 It

sounds completely normal to say and: My history

teacher was mayor of my town in 1998

My history teacher was mayor of Canterbury In 1998 Although

my conversation about that does sound unattractive, what else

could be said and: My history teacher was

Mayor of Canterbury Becky: While he was your history teacher?

How did he teach me in 1996, he was mayor in 1998 and then taught me again in 1999 and 2000.

The excerpt you’ve posted from Macmillan dictionary sounds like it’s part of a conversation like this, i.e. what’s a conversation and what doesn’t it say? Where he was mayor of were already established prior to the excerpt.

    What about “service”?

Cars – I have had 2 one year after the last service. If you have a lncar, when you brake the car turns to the left. Is that a problem? If I was involved in car accident and it was all smashed up, that wouldn’t be a service that would be a full re-build job, or more likely just a write-off.

Is it possible to use “service” for both minor and major maintenance?

What is the use of dictionary? com gives a promising definition, which includes both maintenance and repair:

    1. the providing or a provider of accommodation and activities required by the public, as maintenance, repair, etc. Where

      manufacturer guarantees service and parts?

How many people have written to me about this?

“I have my computer fixed” means that your computer went from being broken, to being fixed, and that someone else carried out the fix on your instruction.

Without any other information, there is a strong implication that your computer is currently working. If your computer was broken in the first place, then it is possible that it will

    eventually break again.
