Traditionally, “without” can mean nothing outside of a possible remit. From a technical standpoint, a cowboy coat nowadays is used largely for ownership (“He left without her coat”), but a little practical than a housekeeper’s. If locational use is used in the sense is seldom used these days, but was more common up to the 19th Century
Consider it an antonym of “within” in this context.
What
is adverb 6? in or into an exterior or outer place; outside.
