When to use for vs of?

I am a sentence like:

Second, we propose a new mechanism we call XYZ, which aims to solve problem X. We implement and evaluate a proof-of-concept for it.

If it is..a proof of concept, how can

it be (or already exists)?

or:

a proof of concept of it.

What is “of” versus “for” in this context?

What is the main aim of a startup startup?
