I think we shouldn’t separate two independent sentences in a long combined sentence. Why does The Economist use the semicolon in bold and introductory sentences in this week’s paper? Why and without a semicolon interrupt the sentence “and for whom he had no interest in keeping it for an exclusive club”. Is it okay to do all this?
