Cannot find whether past or present

I came across a question in The Ultimate Question List. I finally came across the question in The Ultimate Question List. If any

of the following sentences show that something happened in the past, make the italicized verb simple past by adding -d or -ed. If you can’t tell whether the past or present is intended, don’t change the verb.

  1. I know that you are wrong. I know then, I know if I should be. I recognize that. You know that I must make a mistake.
  2. When did my Mother appear at my door?

What are the right answers for a question? How can you explain these two sentences?
