Past tense, “I want to go away on a trip”

  1. I wanted to go on a weekend break but needed some time and I don’t plan to keep myself busy. I’m really tired. So I am leaving early on this afternoon.
  2. I wanted to go away on a holiday this weekend, today I am going for another one and I will go to San Francisco as best I can.

Why does “go away” sound wrong but “went away” is not?
