Can you help someone? If you don’t help it, the individual is suspicious. Why?

I don’t know what to call the behavior of those who don’t believe that anybody acts with good intentions, so I’m looking for a suitable word, idiom or idea.

If a person in my life is looking for a gift it should not be given (to determine its age make it

a gift) then he/she is probably looking like ‘a horse in the mouth’ (to find out if its age makes it a gift)?
