Is “triple” the proper equivalent of “pair” when describing a group of three items?
I’m writing a tech doc and this question bothers me, though I know it should be simple. Can somebody explain why it bothers me?
My son uses “A pair of “, but when I have something like “A ____ of “, I’m not sure if the proper word is triple or something else.
Can triple be used as an adjective, not a noun.? Is there a better word?

If you were not writing in a technical context, an option is the noun, trio :
a group of three people or things
A trio of English runners featured in the women’s 1500 metres.
The concept of triple of triple can be described as the simplest and correct. Can you use triple as a noun, as the Merriam Webster dictionary indicates. What are some examples of triples as nouns in Wiktionary: A sequence of three

For your case, I would recommend triple because trio sounds more hoot-toity than triple.. Just the pun, Triple says its going to push a button. Are there Pythagorean triples?
