Was Federer winning the race?

What do you think about the headline that appears in today’s first New York Times story?

What confusing is the last line of the article, “so that he could win here.” (in english anyway). What makes this wording sound right to you.

Which one is correct and why?

What is the definition of “noncommercial”?

The word “so” can have many meanings. In the headline I would interpret it as meaning, “in such a way that”.

However the headline and indeed the article appear not to have been written by a native English speaker.

How many times a headline gets the design changed? What is the final sentence in this article worth?
