What is exactly hypocrite means?
I just moved to Montreal from Singapore, in September 2016. I’m 21. I first learned English as a second language. I love it but not my first language. This changed my life permanently.
I’m having an argument with my French friend here. She says that “hypocrite” is a synonym for disingenuous, two-faced, or just being a fake victim. I tell her that “hypocrite” in English captures a more narrow meaning. It doesn’t have to imply that your judging someone else but doing the thing you’re critical of yourself. If a guy called someone a terrible father but went home that night to beat his kids, you would use the word “hypocrite” in English. My friend wants to use the word hypocrite for situations where let’s say a girl is talking to another girl and she pretends she likes other women but as soon as she’s gone she says to herself I hate that woman! What does a hypocrite mean? Am I right?
What are some language differences between French and English? Incredibly, she doesn’t mean exactly the same thing as I want to. Recently, she’s insisting on saying it’s the same and now she’s been mesuing the same kind of question. The word is translated from an Old French word. Two-faced and hypocritical are different qualities. What do you think about the two-faced hypocritical individuals?
We humans are very hypocrites rather than being true to what we preach. Why does OOTD talk about how to eat smart and exercise ideally and to what effect. Can anyone give me an example? I suppose a person could be hypocritical even if the one they preach to is themselves– I’ve certainly heard “hypocrite” thrown in the context of failed new year’s resolutions, but this might not strictly be a proper usage.
